DAVIDSON — Civitas Media is closing eight suburban weekly newspapers in towns around Raleigh, N.C., and Dayton, Ohio.
The Davidson-based media company said the eight papers are not a good fit for the company’s business model of providing community news and information portals for areas that are predominantly rural and not well served by other media companies. Civitas said it has offered employment at other company properties to its 12 employees affected by the closings.
The papers that are being closed are the Fuquay-Varina Independent, Garner News, Holly Springs Sun, Cleveland Post and Apex Herald in North Carolina and the Springboro Sun, Kettering/Oakwood Times and Centerville/Washington Township Times in Ohio.
Civitas publishes 35 daily, 28 weekend editions and 53 weekly publications in 11 states with a combined circulation of nearly 1.6 million.
