CHARLOTTE — Police say a man drowned in a southeast Charlotte pond after he apparently thought officers were chasing him.

Authorities say 19-year-old Demonta Deshawn Gaither was reported missing by his mother on Sunday. A Charlotte Fire Department dive team recovered the body from the pond Monday afternoon.

According to family members, Gaither couldn’t swim.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Gaither may have run unto the pond in an attempt to elude officers investigating a call Thursday night about an attempted car break-in. Spokesman Rob Tufano said police gave up their pursuit at the edge of woods after finding no evidence of any break-ins.

Police said a friend who was with Gaither told police the two men knew they were no longer being chased, but it wasn’t clear why they went into the water.
