CHARLOTTE — The family of former Charlotte mayor and Belk department store executive John M. Belk is giving $10 million to Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center for a cancer and heart center.

The Charlotte Observer reported the donation announcement comes as the hospital kicks off a $60 million fundraising campaign for the outpatient center.

The donation will be used to build the John M. and Claudia W. Belk Heart and Vascular Institute.

The hospital plans to break ground on the project in the fall of next year, with completion expected in the fall of 2017.

Officials say consolidating services in a single building will help with accessibility and care coordination.
