COLLETTSVILLE — Authorities in Caldwell County say a 21-year-old Guatemalan man who was visiting family in Morganton has drowned in Wilson Creek after being overtaken by heavy currents.
The News-Topic of Lenoir reports that rescue crews pulled the man from the water Monday evening, about two hours after first responders were dispatched.
The man was swimming in the part of Wilson Creek known as “the bathtub.” It’s the same part of the creek where two Charlotte-area residents drowned in July.
Collettsville Fire and Rescue Capt. Larry Price said rescue crews initially thought the man may have been pinned beneath a rock, but found he’d simply been pushed down by strong currents.
Authorities haven’t released the man’s name because his immediate family was in Guatemala and had not yet been notified.
