ROCK HILL, S.C. — A shuttered mill in northwestern South Carolina has caught fire, spewing clouds of dense, black smoke visible for miles.
The mill housing the former Rock Hill Printing&Finishing Bleachery began burning Friday. The Herald of Rock Hillreported that several nearby homes had to be evacuated. There were no reports of any injuries.
The mill once employed thousands, but has been closed for about 10 years. Officials had been working on demolishing the plant and turning the complex into retail space. It covers more than a city block.
Firefighters said Friday evening that the blaze was under control, but still burning.
Flames broke through the roof and the walls of the old mill, and the smoke could been seen more than a dozen miles away in Charlotte, N.C.
