Nash County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating two sets of skeletal remains found around 7 p.m. Tuesday in a field off of Quarter Road north of Red Oak.
Capt. Pat Joyner said two men riding four-wheelers discovered the skeletons while scouting hunting locations on private property.
“At this time, it is under investigation,” Joyner said. “We will treat it as a homicide until the medical examiner rules (otherwise.)”
Joyner said investigators were unable to determine more information about the bodies and were calling in anthropologists from East Carolina University for assistance.
“We are waiting for the bones to be collected so the medical examiner can tell us whether they were male or female, their race, approximate age, manner of death and maybe an estimate of the time of death,” he said. “Once we have that information, we will look into any missing person cases.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 459-4121.
