NASHVILLE – Nash County commissioners will meet this afternoon to continue their discussions about the budget for the coming fiscal year, which starts July 1.
The board held a brief budget work session earlier this week at the end of its regular monthly meeting. During that meeting, County Manager Zee Lamb reviewed some information with the board and asked for the board’s direction related to a number of budgetary matters.
Some of the issues the board discussed included funding for Nash Community College, Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools, Braswell Memorial Library and other outside agencies. The board also briefly discussed proposed solid waste fee changes.
County commissioners voted in March to direct county staff to increase solid waste fees for homeowners in rural, unincorporated areas of the county and homeowners in municipalities that do not provide door-to-door solid waste collection services from $96 to $100 per year starting next fiscal year.
At that time, the board also voted to charge a new solid waste fee of $25 per year starting July 1 to homeowners in municipalities that do provide door-to-door solid waste collection services – Bailey, Castalia, Middlesex, Nashville, Rocky Mount, Sharpsburg, Spring Hope and Whitakers. In turn, those residents would be permitted to use nine solid waste collection convenience centers in the county. In the past, the convenience centers have only been open to rural residents and residents who do not have access to municipal trash collection services.
During the past couple of months, a number of people have spoken out against the proposed fee changes. On Monday, a couple of county commissioners said they have some growing concerns about the proposed fee changes.
County commissioners did not make any final decisions related to the budget issues they discussed during Monday’s meeting.
They will meet at 2 p.m. in the Claude Mayo Jr. Administration Building, 120 W. Washington St. in Nashville, to continue their budget discussions.
