An Elm City woman and her 3-year-old son died Monday night in a head-on collision in Rocky Mount.

N.C. Highway Patrol First Sgt. M.S. Jones said authorities were called shortly before 9:30 p.m. to a crash on South Church Street just past The Stockyard. Lashunaqa Ilesa Cooper, 21, was inside the vehicle when officials arrived and the toddler, Jiquel Copeland, was thrown from the vehicle. Jones said both were dead when troopers arrived.

The driver of a 2001 GMC truck, Stacey Deans, was taken to Nash General Hospital. His condition was unknown.

According to police reports, Deans, 25, was driving south on South Church Street when the truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with Cooper’s 1991 Honda. Jones said the investigating trooper will meet with the district attorney this afternoon about possible charges.
