Twelve jurors will decide the fate of a Nash County man who is accused of killing his brother in 2008.

Police arrested Antonio Wardell Matthews, 33, on Sept. 9, 2008, charging him with fatally shooting his younger brother, 22-year-old Devin Scriven, a week prior in the room they were sharing at Hal Orr’s Inn at 2420 N. Wesleyan Blvd.

Matthews was scheduled to stand trial for first-degree murder in August, but a judge granted the defense’s request for a continuance. The trial is scheduled to start today.

Ten months prior to his murder, Scriven was shot during an incident that left his mother, Deborah M. Scriven, and her friend, police secretary Leona Johnson, dead. Devin Scriven was interviewed by police after he recovered, but no charges were ever filed in the incident.

Jury selection in Matthews’ trial is slated to begin this morning in N.C. Superior Court, with opening arguments and testimony to follow. Assistant District Attorney Keith Werner said he expects the trial to take several days.
