A man was hospitalized Friday at Nash UNC Health Care for injuries he sustained in an ATV accident in the woods near Interstate 95, Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Bissette said.

Officials received a call about the accident at 2:19 p.m., and it was several minutes later that the first ambulance arrived near the scene, Bissette said.

Paramedics were then led back to where the patient was, about a 10-minute trip through swampy and rough terrain, Bissette said, beginning work on him right away.

The workers strapped the patient to a board and the board to the department’s all-terrain vehicle, occasionally stopping and moving him by hand where the ground got too rough, Bissette said.

The identity of the victim and extent of his injuries remains unknown.

The man was riding with a young girl, who was not injured in the accident, Bissette said.

The Rocky Mount Fire Department, Nash County Sheriff’s Office and Stony Creek Rescue Squad also were on the scene to assist with the rescue.
