Civic leaders in the Twin Counties will meet Wednesday to discuss economic growth and expansion in the region.

The Rocky Mount City Council will hold a joint meeting with Edgecombe and Nash counties’ boards of commissioners to review the community visioning project geared to help define the region’s identity.

Officials said the process will help economic developers and business recruiters become more effective in bringing jobs to the area.

The project comes after a public presentation in February of the Twin County Competitiveness Study.

The study — which was funded by the three public bodies — featured research by Dr. James Johnson of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School on what potential businesses and residents find when they look into moving, relocating or expanding in the Twin Counties.

The study cited demographics of the Twin Counties, with detailed information on age, gender, race, income and employment, and health characteristics. The study also examined the region’s potential strengths and weaknesses.

City Council voted last month to allocate $25,000 from Rocky Mount Community Foundation grants to hire consultants to help with the project. The meeting will be held at the Carolinas Gateway Partnership office on Falls Road.

During his presentation of the study, Johnson recommended six goals for the region to remain competitive: rebrand Edgecombe and Nash counties; recruit talent for industries; revise education from early childhood to college levels; nuture the elderly population; reform electric utility rates; and use the Internet as a portal to strengthen economic development.

The 25,000 cost of the competiveness study was probably a waste of money. Business professors and consultants provide us with information we already know. (or should know about the area) Business professors and consultants are the same people who advise companies/plants to reorganize operations to become more efficient. More widely known as layoffs, downsizing, etc. etc.

Rocky Mount should follow Wilson's example on recruiting new industry to the area. Over the past 20 years or so Wilson has focused on recruiting small to medium sized plants. Facilities that employ between 50-400 workers each. They understand it is easier to attract a smaller plant than pinning their hopes on landing the next Firestone. They have also have focused on recruiting pharmaceutical/medical supply companies which generally are more recession proof.

I agree that education needs to be improved in the area. Improvements have been required for decades. Specific emphasis needs to be placed on math, science, reading, and writing for students at all levels. Not just college bound students. Vocational and trade skills need to emphasized more at the secondary-high school level as well.
