Grandson arrested for robbing, beating his grandmother

From Staff Reports

Monday, October 19, 2009

Police this weekend arrested a Rocky Mount man accused of robbing and beating his own grandmother.

Authorities said 66-year-old Nancy Outlaw was hospitalized late Friday after her 21-year-old grandson, Randall Clay Joyner, pried her purse from her hands and assaulted her in her home on Covenant Court.

Outlaw’s arm was broken in the struggle, and she was hit several times in the face, police said.

Outlaw told police Joyner came to her house around 8 p.m. Friday asking for money, but she refused. Outlaw grabbed her purse, she said, fearing her grandson might try to steal it.

Joyner grabbed his grandmother’s arm and struggled with her, police said, eventually ripping the purse from her hands. He took $80 and fled the scene, Outlaw told investigators.

Outlaw was taken to Nash General Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries.

Police found Joyner the following day and charged him with robbery and assault inflicting serious injury. Joyner, who has a lengthy criminal history of larceny, was being held in Nash County jail early Monday under a $20,000 bond.
