Former Rocky Mount Police Chief John Manley was named Thursday as the new police chief of Elizabeth City State University.
Manley, ECSU’s interim police chief since May, replaces Sam Beamon, who resigned several weeks after being placed on administrative leave April 25.
Beamon left the department after the State Bureau of Investigation began investigating allegations on the campus of obstruction of justice and intimidation of a witness.
Manley will supervise a staff of 28, including 11 police officers, eight security officers, seven telecommunicators and two office personnel.
Prior to taking over the ECSU police department as interim chief, Manley served as interim police chief of the Elizabeth City Police Department from May 2012 to December 2012.
He also worked for the Rocky Mount Police Department for 21 years, the last seven as police chief. He retired from the Rocky Mount Police Department in 2011.
Manley holds a master’s degree in public administration from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Shaw University.
He also is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the Southern Police Institute in Louisville, Ky.
