A building caught fire Saturday in the 400 block of Buena Vista Avenue.
Rocky Mount firefighters arrived at the scene around 4:37 p.m. and found heavy black smoke coming from the structure, officials said.
Upon entering the building, firefighters found the flames contained to one of the bedrooms and quickly controlled the fire, extinguishing the blaze by 5:01 p.m.
Fire damage was limited to the room where the blaze started, but the rest of the building suffered moderate smoke damage, officials said.
The owner of the building, Farouk Hamad, was not present at the time of the fire.
No utilities were running when firefighters arrived, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
