Rocky Mount firefighters responded to a fire Friday afternoon behind the tennis courts of the old Rocky Mount High School.

They were called to 216 S. Mayo St. at 2:19 p.m., Battalion Chief Larry Johnson said. A large pile of wood and railroad cross ties beside the railroad tracks was burning, Johnson said. The fire was burning on an area of about 12 feet by 20 feet, Johnson said. He said it was contained to the pile.

The fire took about 20 minutes to put out, Johnson said. No one was injured and no structures were threatened, Johnson said. The cause of the fire had not been determined Friday night.
