A Pinetops father was jailed this weekend in the attempted murder of his two-week-old baby, according to the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s office.
Michael Lee Banks, 21, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. He was jailed in Edgecombe County under an $885,000 secured bond.
According to a press release, Banks slammed the child on the bed after getting angry at the mother. A short time later, the unidentified child became unresponsive and was taken to the emergency room at Vidant Medical Center in Tarboro.
The infant later was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where the baby’s condition is unknown. Authorities said the baby had multiple bruises on its face and neck and the child’s brain had been bleeding in several locations, which is consistent with shaken baby syndrome.
