I know it’s hard to think of fall plaids, suits and boots when it’s ninety degrees outside, but autumn is around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about winterizing our wardrobes.
And this fall we’ll see a lot of fashion choices that are reminiscent of the 1980s: power suits, bold colors, shoulder pads and waist-cinching belts.
Remember “Dynasty”? Think Joan Collins without the big hair, take down the shoulder pads a few notches, add some opaque tights instead of sheer hose and you’ve got a fall 2009 outfit.
Other trends to look for this fall include:
Cardigans
Whether it’s a big slouchy boyfriend sweater or a tailored crewneck cable from J Crew, a cardigan is perfect for early fall nights in the south. Pair it with jeans or a pencil skirt and you’re ready to go.
Tailored sheath
Sheaths are always a classic look, most never really go out of style. This fall sees the clean, classic lines of the sheath get a slight makeover. Some designers, like Armani, cinch the waist with a wide belt, and others add an unexpected lapel to add a little something quirky to this usually staid silhouette.
Plaids
This is nothing new for fall and winter wardrobes, but this time around, designers are offering more subtle hints of plaid in subdued grays and blues. Go for an almost-there blue and black plaid jacket to pair with a black wool pencil skirt or a sheath jumper with a subtle green plaid over a gray turtleneck.
Block colors
Color block dresses, also reminiscent of the 1980s are front and center again this season. Look for these dresses in loose shifts or tailored styles.
Bohemian luxe
Bohemian for fall goes a little upscale from the shabby chic of recent seasons: Slouchy cardigans have shinier buttons and are made of cashmere, and tunics are tailored for a truer fit.
Large pearls
Pearls are the centerpiece on this season’s must-have list of accessories. The larger, the better. Also keep your turquoise jewelry handy, it’s still a hot accessory to adorn your neck or wrist.
Bright colors
This fall, there’s a color for everyone. Red, orange, cobalt blue, yellow, bright pink and purple are just a few of the more popular hues you’ll see on store racks.
