Tired of the Racial Aspect

I am so sick and tired of everyone, including the media, trying to make this into a racial issue. I don't believe it is a racial issue at all. If it was racial- wouldnt someone have said "black people think it is a good idea". "white people think it is a bad idea". I also resent the thought that the people opposed to it only live in Nash County-- I live on the Edgecombe side of Rocky Mount, and am very proud to be there. I don't see this improving my county-- I see it raising my taxes, and the taxes of the people around me- who already pay outrageous Edgecombe taxes, having their City taxes raised- and having to decide between paying taxes, and paying something else. I think that some people on they City Council, and again the media-- would really like to make this about race- and they are doing a good job of dividing the city. Either the mayor or someone on the Council needs to step up and keep the division from happening. Opposing ideas should be able to be viewed- without race becoming the central issue.

Steve Stevenson Rocky Mount Human

Relations Commission said it was time for the people to come together to talk about the RACE RELATIONS. Well let's see how many people contact the HRC to attempt to make it happen.

opt out of rocky mount

Opt out of rocky mount is a good idea. White people need to vote with their wallets. We need to organize our own boycotts. I am so sick of Andre Knight and the RACIST city council. And all the Racist bureaucrats like Charles Penny. Racism against white people is very apparent at city hall. And it should be investigated. I remember when the blacks boycotted Merita. They sure closed that plant down.

Louis, I agree with you

Louis, I agree with you totally. Moreover, the event center is a done-deal. It WILL happen for three primary reasons: The arrogance of certain elected officials, the egos of those who envision the grandeur and personal recognition coming from such a complex, and the perception that all of the opposition is grounded in racial bias. These factors are precluding any hint of commonsense and I see no means of changing the course. Has anyone noticed the lack of regional news coverage for this important event? Know why? People across NC are sick and tired of hearing about Rocky Mount's racial infighting. Therefore, in the words of Hippocrates - "Drastic times require drastic measures." While the area has tried a number of slogans meant to spin a positive light on the community (i.e. Remarkable Rocky Mount, Ask me what I like about Rocky Mount, and of course - The City on the Rise) I suggest the newest slogan - Opt Out of Rocky Mount. While those of us who stand in opposition to the Event Center as well as the general direction of Rocky Mount may now feel that we are powerless, I tell you that we are indeed NOT powerless. But rather, our ongoing financial support is imperative for their agenda. Without our increased property taxes, without state-provided revenue sharing from our restaurant tabs, retail purchases and other expenditures, without transfers from the City's utility fund, the City of Rocky Mount simply cannot afford the debt service for such a capital project, much less the annual operating expenses. With that said, WE need to simply "Opt Out." Simply move and spend your money elsewhere. Do not attend the basketball tournaments at the Event Center, do not participate in Downtown Live events, do not be a patron of peripheral establishments which spawn up near the Event Center...simply take your money elsewhere. But first and foremost, MOVE! If you are like me and have family and/or business commitments that prevent you from leaving the area, then relocate outside of the Rocky Mount tax district and Rocky Mount Utility Service Area. In doing so you will be saving a bunch of money, thus offsetting the inevitable declining property value of your home currently located in Rocky Mount. Make no mistake, we do have options; there are wonderful communities in the Red Oak, Nashville and other incorporated areas outside of Rocky Mount. We do not have to put up with no voice and no representation. If you think about it, over the past several years we have already been selectively opting out of much of Rocky Mount due to safety concerns. How many of you no longer allow family members to go to the mall because of gangs and unruly teenagers? How many of you no longer go to certain restuarant chains and a certain hamburger place because they are overrun by the drunken and armed Club-Crowd? How many of you are already avoiding City parks and other public places for fear of being assaulted? Folks simply "Opt Out of Rocky Mount." T-Shirts, bumper stickers and Facebook site coming soon.

A lose-lose proposition....

I left the meeting last night convinced that proposed event center has become a racial issue. In fact, the Telegram article seems to point to the same conclusion. That is sad, but not altogether surprising. This city is severely divided along racial lines, and the leadership of our city has done nothing to ease that divide. In fact, a few of the city politicians have actually exploited it. Why do I believe the city is faced with a lose-lose proposition as regards that folly? Well, if it's put to a referendum and those who want it, win, then, we taxpayers will be stuck with higher property taxes to pay for it; however, if it fails to pass, then those who lost will cry that the racism of the old South is alive and well in Rocky Mount, thereby widening even further the racial divide that exists (if that is possible). Either way, the city loses. Our politicians and city management have put us in that predicament. All of them, and I mean all of them, need to be replaced. It we are stuck with that folly, we can expect to see the value of our property to decline even faster that we have seen thus far, and, of course, this decline will result in a increased tax rate that will discourage further development within the city limits. I'm beginning to believe that what we are witnessing is a city that is fulfilling its destiny to become a southern version of East St. Louis, Illinois. There are marked similarities to the path we are on and that which East St. Louis followed. If you doubt that, check the Wiki article on that city.

SMDH! Race Relations

Steve Stephenson member of the Rocky Mount Human Relations a white male who spoke last night talked about the need for the Rocky Mount Human Relations to have a meeting to discuss the racial divide. Oh they don't want to do that because it would show who the racist folks really are. I have attended meetings held by the RMHC discussing race and where were these folks. I have attended meetings held by the Common Ground group that was under the direction of now Councilwoman Chris Miller and where were these folks? Oh well! The Event Center didn't just become a racial issue, there has been a racial issue long before this council became a 4-3 black majority. Hell that made things worse. "They" said they would leave town if the council became a 4-3 black majority. This means "they" have never supported this council and never will so therefore this council must continue to make Rocky Mount a better place to live, work and play. Rocky Mount City Council after hearing the presentation for the 1st time from those the real resources and not those who are opposing who are trying to scare folks that this is not a good thing. After the awesome presentation "they" came up and didn't ask questions but came with the attitude of "they" didn't want it, didn't want it because it would be downtown and didn't want it because it would be on the Edgecombe side. I bet it is some real choice words that "they" are calling this council especially Rocky Mount Councilman Mayor Pro-tem, President Rocky Mount NAACP Andre Knight. If "they" are saying what they are saying here I would love to be a fly on the wall when they are behind closed doors. LMBAO! I am Curmilus Dancy II @ thepoliticalagitator and I am damn good at it.

Dancy sez, "I am damn good at it."

I find it humorous when an "agitator" only succeeds in agitating himself.

Agitated you because if I didn't

you would not have responded. How ignant! SMDH! I am Curmilus Dancy II @ thepoliticalagitator and I am damn good at it!

Curly D...Funnier Than Larry the Cable Guy

Yup, he should stick with what he knows best, sweeping the floors and cleaning the bathrooms at Honeywell. I just wish he would take some English Grammer classes at Edgecombe Comm College. He would be much funnier if we could comprehend what he's trying to write. Clearly, in a battle of wits this guy's out of ammo.

Rutabaga I normally don't comment on where

I work but for the record I am an Assembly and Test Technician for the past 27 years ignant! However I ain't too damn proud to sweep floors and clean bathrooms if I would have to. LMBAO! You need to report facts something ya'll don't want to be made known so ya post a bunch of lies and hide behind code names. You comprehend what I write along with others because if ya'll didn't you would not respond by trying to discredit the messenger. I am Curmilus Dancy II @ thepoliticalagitator.com and I am damn good at it! You have been agitated. SMDH!

Public Referendum

My guess is that the event center would be rejected if a public referendum were held. People from many areas of Rocky Mount believe the city council should be focusing on other priorities besides a 45 million dollar event center. Of course it could depend on turn out. However, it probably would not be rejected by as wide a margin as opponents hope.

There is No Fair in Life. Only those festivals in the Fall!

Those who cry "fair" are often those who blame others for their failures. Raise yourself up by your own bootstraps. Open your own business. Buy goods from whom you want to support. Don't hide behind social theft via tax and claim it is for the fairness.

You want it for yourself because you think you are "owed something". It's "our turn" "they've got theirs". What claptrap. What poppycock.

The City Council should consider a public referendum. The will of the people - the votes of the citizens - not the declaration of a few tyrannical council members so "bought in" to this event center they can't back down now without losing face. So - don't lose face. Let the votes speak and THEN let the chips fall where they may.

Failure of equality on the Edgecombe County side

of Rocky Mount was because of who were on the Rocky Mount City Council previously. It was some of those staff members who worked at the leisure of the previous councils who didn't do a damn thing to promote and to direct equality of life to the Edgecombe side. Damn the bootstraps thingy? That is just what this council is doing, what the previous council failed to do, make downtown Rocky Mount what it ought to be by bringing equality of life to the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount. Hell yeah the Edgecombe County side of Rocky Mount is owed something because these folks have lived on one side of the tracks and have spent money on the other side and has not received a return. Now is the time and if not now, then when? Ain't no referendum needed because in my opinion the council should act on what is within the best interest of what is good for the CITY OF ROCKY MOUNT both Nash and Edgecombe. Not only will the folks in Rocky Mount benefit from the EVENT CENTER but of Rocky Mount was because of who was on the Rocky Mount City Council previously. So I say to the Rocky Mount City Council, you know your role, you know your duties, the policies and procedures of being a Rocky Mount City Councilman/woman. Yes, you ain't going to please everyone but at the end of the day you took an oath to serve in this position so do what is right or do what you feel but always remember your role. Don't allow others to sway you when they have no clue of what the role of a Rocky Mount City Council member is. .
