Three Republicans file to challenge Ellmers in May primary

RALEIGH — First-term Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers has drawn three primary challengers.

Richard Speer of Fayetteville on Friday became the third Republican to challenge Ellmers for the 2nd Congressional District seat representing the central Piedmont. They face Sonya Holmes of Broadway and Clement Munno of Aberdeen in the May GOP primary .

More GOP candidates also are getting into the race for the 9th Congressional District seat of retiring U.S. Rep. Sue Myrick.

Jon Gauthier became the eighth Republican to file candidacy papers for the seat with the N.C. State Board of Elections.

Bernard A. Holliday of Creedmoor became the first Democrat to enter the race for the 13th Congressional District. Wake County Commissioner Paul Coble and the former U.S. attorney for eastern North Carolina, George Holding, have entered the GOP race.
