An Edgecombe County resident is dead after a Monday afternoon altercation with a deputy, authorities said.

According to a press release, an Edgecombe County deputy responded to a domestic dispute around 4 p.m. and when he arrived, an unidentified subject charged the deputy with a weapon. The deputy reportedly ordered the subject to stop and put down the weapon, but the subject failed to obey the officer’s commands and the deputy fatally shot the subject.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation took over the investigation, which is standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.
