Nash-Rocky Mount school board members heard a report on traffic congestion that occurred during the first day of classes and from a mother concerned about a school uniform policy at a meeting Monday.

Mark Strickland, special assistant for auxiliary services, said despite a 75-car backup on N.C. 58 at Coopers Elementary and a problematic stalled car in the bus lane at Winstead Avenue Elementary, the first days of classes in the district “went smoothly.”

During the public input session, Cheryl Speight voiced her disapproval over the school board’s inaction to her complaint of the dress code policy at Nash Central Middle School.

Speight said her daughter was pulled out of class Friday for a “half-inch ‘A’” on her yellow shirt. The logo violates the school’s dress code policy.

Speight’s son, Patrick, also addressed the board and condemned the policy, suggesting there were double standards with which policies schools followed and which policies were ignored. The board will address the uniform policy at an upcoming policy meeting.
