The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed Davistown-Mercer Road between Faith Baptist Church Road and High Level Road northwest of Pinetops to replace the existing bridge that crosses over a tributary of Town Creek.

Crews are expected to work on the bridge until Oct. 24. A $381,101 contract was awarded to Smith-Rowe of Mount Airy for the work.

A signed detour will be in place during construction. Motorists will use Faith Baptist Church Road, N.C. 43 and High Level Road to travel around the project site.

The existing bridge was built in 1957 and has been deemed structurally deficient.
