Diner promotes online orders

A local restaurant owner has invested in an online ordering system that allows customers to place orders from home and within minutes have them routed to the cook.

The system at Brian’s Cheesesteaks at 1129 Jeffreys Road is freeing up staff time and helping customers who place to-go orders get out of the restaurant quicker, owner Brian Vick said.

And customers who participate are receiving a 10 percent discount for placing orders online, Vick said.

“The customers like it,” Vick said. “They don’t have to wait. If they know they are going to come here tomorrow for lunch, they can order that food tonight. They can order food 24 (hours a day), 7 (days a week).”

The orders can be placed on Vick’s Web page.

Vick hired a firm FAMtastic Designs.com out of Kentucky to design the site.

It cost $1,500 to develop the Web page and $2,300 for the server that is necessary for the system. He also pays $200 in recurring monthly charges to keep the Web site ordering system running.

“I think it’s worth it,” Vick said. “We didn’t do it to make money. It’s not a moneymaker. It’s just to enhance the business.”

The ordering process happens in a split second, Vick said. The restaurant has the food ready for pickup within 15 minutes.

“The order goes right into the kitchen, so when a customer orders their food they ring themselves up at the same time. They are their own cashier, so to speak,” Vick said.

His web site is registered with GoDaddy.com.

“So when you contact Brian’s Cheesesteaks, the main server directs (the order) back to Embarq,” Vick said. “Embarq sends it through my modem. My modem sends it through the router. The router sends it to the server, and the server uploads the information back to the customer on the other end.”

Vick said the online ordering system is comparable with those one might find at a major chain restaurant like Domino’s.

“I’m doing what big boys are doing,” he said.

The ordering system allows the employees to focus on servicing customers in the restaurant, Vick said.

“It really saves on labor. (Employees) have more time in servicing the customer versus answering the telephone,” Vick said.

Last year, Vick invested $40,000 in a handheld computerized ordering system that is being used inside the restaurant.

The Write-On Handheld system by Action Systems Inc. transfers the customer’s order to the kitchen after a server taps a electronic stylus over the order.

The equipment has made his business much more efficient and is more than paying for itself, Vick said. Waitresses no longer have to jot down orders on paper and bring them back to the cook, speeding up the ordering process.

A credit card swiping device attaches to the hand-held computer, allowing the customer to pay for the order on the spot.

Brian's is a great restaurant

First, the aquarium is there to add to the atmosphere. I love the aquarium. The people and customers have been there forever. How many restaurants do you know that keep most of their staff for years? As far as the tight jeans, how many young girls do you see walking around in loose jeans? That is just how they wear them now. Brian is a great business owner and a great father. How many restaurants do you get to see 3 generations in? Grandma Joyce, Granddad Billy, Brian and baby Palin always there to talk and entertain. It's a family place with great food and great people. Brian does need more room because business is growing fast but he's always on his game, so I'm sure he will address that in the future. He's always looking for ways to make it better.

Atmosphere

Ok, trade atmosphere for less business. Doesn't sound like a good business decision if you ask me. Don't ask me, ask all of the employees, they hate the new location of the aquarium. By the way, they have great food at great prices with a great staff. Been eating there for years.

more room

I believe that Brian is adding another entrance and possibly breaking down the wall and adding more space to the restuarant. I've heard him mention it a few times and maybe this will help with the growing business.

I agree

I agree it is a great place to eat! Didn't mean no offense about the jean comments, just didn't understand why someone had to mention it was a conservative restaurant. It's a GREAT PLACE TO EAT PERIOD!

No Waiting area

Moving the fish tank to the waiting area was a big mistake. I now see customers leave constantly because they don't want to wait in line outside. What good is the fish tank anyway? It's not a seafood restaurant!!

Thats not as bad as what I

Thats not as bad as what I read about the other day. One restaurant wanted to play the save the planet green card by investing in solar electric and ended up scaring away half the customers (even the regulars).

The more I think about it...

Why must someone have to put religion into this conversation? It's an article about a great place to eat! No more, no less! Maybe cause you feel that religion isn't 100% in your own life, so you have to put it into other people's life's? Thats all I can think of. How about this...Go eat at a GREAT PLACE (Brians), then go home and preach to your kids! Sounds like a plan to me!

Great place!

Brians is great! Keep up the great work!

Great Place to Eat

If you are looking for a great place to eat, go to Brians. I eat there every week. They are Republican, conservative people that believe in the morals of the Bible. You can eat, watch Fox News, the only truthful news, and enjoy great food. They have very nice cooks, waitresses, bus boys, and cashiers. I absolutely love the place. Brian has worked long and hard to make this place a success along with his parents, Billy and Joyce Vick. God bless each of them as they continue to make Brian's the best place to eat in Rocky Mount. And that's the truth.....

This is a joke, right?

First, I don't really care if the person cooking my burger is a Republican, Democrat, or Communist for that matter. Fox News the only truthful news? That has to be a joke. I've never bought into the so called liberally biased mainstream news. I see Fox News at McDonalds and Bojangles too. You may want to include them in your conservative, Republican, morally upright, Bible supporting restaurants.

Conservatives?

It's a great place to eat, but come on....A 100% conservative place wouldn't have young girls in tight jeans serving your meals. Lets get real here. Call it both ways. They may be conservative, but they're not 100% conservative!

Now that's what

I am talking about. Investing in making the business more efficient.

Yeah Dancy

And I never heard of no one at Brians trying to get a fellow co-worker fired before. Like you did at Honeywell, remember that?

Now here Butch is being

Now here Butch is being positive, and you want to make this negative. What does this have to do with this story?
