It's the weekend. Everyone wants to relax. Maybe have a few drinks.
We've all been there.
But if you drink, please don't drive.
As silly and repetitive as that statement might be, some still refuse to listen.
In a matter of four hours last weekend, two people were killed in Nash and Edgecombe counties because of alcohol-related accidents.
One was a 19-year-old from Whitakers, who was killed when an intoxicated driver crossed the center line and hit the car she was a passenger in. The inebriated man walked away with a broken ankle and a handful of possible charges, including a felony.
The other victim was a 28-year-old man who was driving down the street he lived on when he lost control of his minivan, hit a ditch and flipped the vehicle. Early reports indicated he had been drinking, wasn't wearing a seatbelt and had no license.
With graduations and holidays sprinkled throughout the summer months, we can be sure to hear similar reports in the months to come. Unfortunately, they are stories that usually end tragically for all parties involved.
Before you kick back and have a good time, take note of this week's two local deaths. These two deaths could have been avoided by handing over a set of car keys to a designated driver.
