Rocky Mount Parks & Recreation Hoot Learning Club attended the N.C. State Fair in Raleigh on Oct. 14.
The Hoot Learning Club members enjoyed playing games, riding and a concert featuring American Idol winner Ruben Studdard.
After the concert, the children had an opportunity to go back stage and meet Studdard and get personalized autograph pictures of the celebrity.
Thomas Jordan, a student from the program, said, "I've never meet anyone famous. ... That was amazing to me!"
The director of the after-school program, Shawnya Bullock, made this event possible for the children by contacting a personal friend who happens to be Studdard's manager.
Bullock said that she thought this would be a great opportunity to encourage children that dreams do come true if you remain faithful and consistent.
The Hoot Learning runs from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday for a monthly $35 fee. This program provides transportation from school in the city limits for $15 a month.
Children get help with homework and the program provides recreational activities, enrichment program, community development skills and field trips that are educational and fun.
