Storms cut power to thousands for second night
RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 16,000 utility customers were without power in North Carolina and South Carolina after a severe storm system swept through the states for a second night.
The National Weather Service said thunderstorms moved across the states Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Duke Energy said it had 8,855 outages in the two states and Progress Energy said it had 7,638 at the height of the storms.
Progress Energy reported about 1,300 customers without service early Thursday. Duke Energy reported fewer than 300 customers without service. South Carolina Electric & Gas reported about 300 customers without service early Thursday.
The weather service said it received reports of downed trees and power lines in several counties and that storms contained violent wind gusts.
Nearly 30,000 customers lost service in storms Tuesday.
