The 20th annual Nash Community College Foundation Student Scholarship Golf Classic raised more than $30,000 for student scholarships.
The tournament was held Oct. 1 at Birchwood Country Club in Nashville with 160 golfers participating. Members of the golf committee coordinating this event were 2009 Golf Chairman Scott Parker, Cam Blalock, Bill Carver, Norman Chambliss, David Combs, Clay Frazier, Chris Gardner, George Hamilton and Joe Saputo.
This year’s grand tournament sponsors were: North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives, Autumn Care of Nash, FAC Food Service Logistics, McLane Carolina, Nash Health Care Systems, Oakley Collier Architects P.A. and Sandy Cross Consultant Service. Hospitality and event contributors were Birchwood Country Club Pro Shop, Carolina Eagle Budweiser Distributors, The Cheesecake Factory Bakery, Chic-Fil-A of Cobb Corners, Davenport Auto Park, The HoneyBaked Ham Company & CafĂ©, Outback Steakhouse, Poppies International, Speight’s Trophy Shop and Sun Drop Bottling Company.
The first place team in the championship flight was Team Tyson with a total net score of 48. Team members were Will Tyson, Blake Eldridge, Brandon Godwin and Richie Hunt. In second place was the Speight’s Trophy Shop team with a net score of 49.6. Team members included: Carolyn Hinton, Ashley Leonard, Ray Richardson and Roscoe Speight.
The first flight winner with a net score of 50.5 was Comer Oil with players Ricky Ladd, Joe Mitchell, Sam Proctor and H.C. Shearin. The second place winner in the same flight was the Hampton Village team with a net score of 50.6 with team players James Allen, Ginger Burk, Sammie Dickens and June Hurt.
The second flight was tied by Oakley-Collier Architects with players David Griffin, Franki Joyner, Tim Oakley and Chris White and the McLane Carolinas team with players Christa Allen, Jim Carpenter, Jim McLaughlin and Danny Rimberg. Both teams held net scores of 51.6 requiring a tie breaker beginning on hole 18 and moving backward under a match play format until a winner was declared. The tie was broken on hole 16 and the Oakley-Collier Architects team was named the first place winner of the second flight.
Closest-to-the-pin contest winners were: Richard Davenport on hole two representing Calvin Davenport Inc., Wilson Lane on hole nine representing Poppies International, Phil Dixon on hole 12 representing Providence Bank, Gil Moore on hole 17 representing DanCo Builders and Steve Hopkins on hole 18 representing Teeny Weeny Cleaning.
Longest drive for the ladies was Rhonda Williams; the longest drive for the men was Scott McCellan and the longest drive for the seniors was William O’Conney.
