The Happy Hill Community Garden broke ground in March under the leadership of Nash County Master Gardener L.W. Farmer.
Located in the 1200 block of Gay Street, the gardens consist of 27 plots each measuring 400 square feet. Farmer paid the city a rental fee and supplied the fertilizer, seeds and tools. In exchange, the city provided the initial tillage and tool storage.
Farmer offered education and a hands-on experience for city dwellers – who ranged in age from 13 to 89 years old – to grow their own gardens. One of the gardeners said she saved more than $800 this summer by growing her own vegetables.
Farmer said the experience has been rewarding and that he has made some very special friends. The Master Gardeners Volunteer Association recently presented farmer with an award for his dedication and accomplishments in this successful community service project.
