The winning Parker Middle School team members pose after winning the Battle of the Books. The team will advance to the regional contest March 25 in Franklin County.

The media center at Red Oak Middle School was alive with excitement Wednesday as Battle of the Books team members from each of the middle schools in the Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System participated in the annual event.

More than 60 students competed in a series of 10 rounds.

Shaw University's interim president slated to speak at Heritage Banquet
Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, the interim president of Shaw University, is also its 14th president and the first female to serve in this capacity.

She will arrive in Rocky Mount at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Thorne Chapel Family Life Center at 1624 Windsor Drive.

Northern Nash's wind ensemble attends National Concert Festival
The Northern Nash Wind Ensemble returned to N.C. Sunday after spending four days in Indianapolis soaking up some of the best musical instruction ever available to high school students.

By invitation, they attended Bands of America’s National Concert Festival at which they were joined by only 15 other select bands from around the country.
