The Tar River Chapter of The National Wild Turkey Federation will sponsor its annual J.A.K.E.S. Day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday on Rose Hill Farm just north of Nashville.

The free event will feature many activities for kids, including a BB gun shoot, archery, face painting, fossil dig, rock climbing wall, hunting safety demonstration and displays of local fish and wildlife.

Local Boy Scouts will camp out at the site the night before and construct a rope bridge and fast zipline.

Hot dogs and drinks will be available for $1 each, with proceeds going to the Scouts to help them fund other projects throughout the year.

Senior center to sponsor dance

The Nash County Senior Center will sponsor a Community Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at 103 North Alston St. in Nashville.

The Roadrunner DJ Service will be playing a variety of music, including country, classic rock, beach and shag, said senior center Coordinator Jamie Wilson.

Admission to the dance is $5, and no smoking or alcohol is allowed. The senior center sponsors the dances on the second and fourth Fridays of each month.

Groups play host to poetry night

The Aray of Hope House and GRASPP will sponsor an Open Mic and Poetry Night from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Booker T. Washington Community Center.

The poetry and performance contest is open to children ages 10 to 18 years old and will award prizes for the first, second and third place winners. The guest speaker will be Mike LaBounty from Fred’s Club, who will talk about entrepreneurship. For more information or to register for the event, call 252-469-9463 or 252-557-2151.
