Toy Run set to rev up

The Rocky Mount Harley-Davidson H.O.G. Chapter will sponsor its annual Toy Run on Saturday at the business at 928 N. Winstead Ave.

Registration begins at 9 a.m., and the motorcycle procession will take off at noon.

“It benefits all of the local families that receive assistance from the Salvation Army,” said Mary Smith, motorclothes manager for the business. “Anybody can take part in this ride, and it’s open to all makes and models of motorcycles.”

The event will include live music performed by The Blenders and food provided by Gardner’s Barbecue Restaurant. Raffle tickets are being sold for $10 for a chance to win a new 2010 Harley-Davidson Custom Sportster.

Nonriders can participate in the event by bringing a new, unwrapped toy or making a $10 donation. For more information, call 446-7292.

H1N1 vaccinations offered

The Nash County Health Department will be offering H1N1 vaccinations from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at its offices in Nashville.

Health officials said the vaccinations will be available to pregnant women and children ages 6 months to 35 months old.

Vaccinations also will be given from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Nash Agriculture Center in Nashville. Pregnant women, people and children under 24 years old, people who live with or take care of children under the age of 6 months old, health care and EMS workers and people ages 25 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions are eligible for Tuesday’s vaccination clinic.

People 65 years and older are not among the targeted groups for this vaccination, health officials said.

For more information or updates to the vaccination schedule, call 252-459-9819 or log onto www.health.co.nash.nc.us.

Expo to target youth violence

The Gang Resistance, Awareness, Suppression & Prevention Program group will sponsor a youth violence expo from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Golden East Crossing mall.

The expo will feature an art contest, speeches by public officials and a variety of music and dance team performances.

“The expo is an opportunity to educate the community on what we’re doing,” said Cynthia L. Jackson, a gang prevention specialist for GRASPP. “It’s really a movement to educate the community on youth violence – the impact of gangs and youth violence on our community.”

Co-sponsors of the expo include the Golden East Crossing mall, Aray of Hope House and His Choice One Entity.

For more information about the expo or GRASPP call 937-2213, ext. 108 or log onto www.grasppforpeace.org.

Group to sponsor fundraising talent show

A fundraising talent show to benefit the Association for Learning Disabled and Handicapped will take place at 7 p.m. Saturday at Winstead Avenue Elementary School.

“It’s an opportunity for a good time and to support a good cause,” said Donna Smith, vice president of the ALDGH. “It’s not only to raise money, but to show that Rocky Mount has a lot of talent.”

Registration to participate is $10 and tickets for the show are $5. The winner of the $250 grand prize will be chosen by the audience with the help of an applause meter.

The ALDH is a support group for families who have children with learning differences, Smith said.

To register or purchase tickets, call 252-972-9896, 252-937-7518 or 252-903-8755.
