Months ago, the town of Whitakers sought high school students from the area to create a banner that would represent the town’s growth through the NC STEP program.
Collaborating with local art teacher Preference Evans, the town found a young artist to suit their needs. Patronia Marshall, senior at North Edgecombe High School, worked faithfully for almost a month using computer software to design the perfect image for Whitakers.
“I was elated when Ms. Evans asked us to do this project,” Marshall said. “I was also a bit skeptical because it was difficult to believe that my work would actually be used for the town’s banner. It is still shocking to see my banner design literally hanging in the Town of Whitakers.”
“Patronia was pleasantly surprised by the scholarship check he received at the kickoff; he had no idea that he would receive any monetary compensation," Evans said.
Evans said her student is a very modest, multi-talented individual who she commends for his drive and readiness to accept challenges.
