Despite being only a month into the new year, Rocky Mount residents have had some harsh reminders of the presence of gangs, including two homicides and the shooting of four boys while playing basketball.

Help Rocky Mount Please Help

If you are reading the news paper your probably not one of the perpetrators of the criminal activity. Look at the pain in the eyes of this heart broken lady. People have a tendency to do nothing until it effects them, the black community needs to unite in an effort to put and end to the gang activity in RMT. We cant dodge the truth here, we cant blame the white man or the boogie man, but you can blame the same ones causing a disturbance in the city relations. They would have to have admitted that there race was the problem, and heaven forbid that. Several years ago it was brought to the Police Chiefs and majority black city councils attention that a gang problem was developing in RMT, and the response was that we did not have a gang problem. Now we are known for gang violence, nick name "Murda Mount" this resulted from a select few attempting to manage a city when you cant even manage your own neighborhood. Take the money that your about to waist on another project, and spend it on cleaning up the mess you have created. Back in the 1990's Davidson county NC had a crime problem, they elected a sheriff who put his officers in tactical uniforms, provided them weapons equivalent to the thugs and within 18 months reduced the crime 62%. His life was threatened constantly so he was escorted during the first 18 months. The money and property seized whet to his budget to support the department. The US marshals are not going to come in a clean up our self inflicted problem. Self inflicted because the brother running the RMPD had his head stuck up another woman's skirt and not focused on the gangs sneaking up behind him.

"We cant dodge the truth

"We cant dodge the truth here, we cant blame the white man or the boogie man, but you can blame the same ones causing a disturbance in the city relations." Damn want to blame the city relations for criminal activity, too ignant! "They would have to have admitted that there race was the problem, and heaven forbid that." We have been talking about black on black crime in our community so don't even go there. There have been numerous meetings in the black community over the years. First of all they do not have any money for the Event Center. And the money that would be earmarked for the Event Center would not be able to be used for anything else but that. Goes to show how ignant some folks are as it relates to how money can be used by the City Council. Several years ago I attended some meetings and real gangs were not a big problem. In those meetings I learned about the status of gangs in the area. "Self inflicted because the brother running the RMPD had his head stuck up another woman's skirt and not focused on the gangs sneaking up behind him." Sad wants to blame the former Chief of RMPD. Now since you have shared your opinion, I am going to add mines. I bet you and some others will not want to get to the root of the problem. But how would I know because you are hiding behind a code name.

Curmilus,Curmilus,Curmilus !

Is your family ignoring you again ?

"Creating A Safe Place" with sports-athletics

I disagree with some of the comments about sports. Although sports can be rewarding and provide an outlet away from crime it is not the ultimate solution. Rocky Mount would have very little crime if that were the case. I would prefer to read more about excelling in the classroom than the athletic field. Very few people are going to play big time college football or basketball. And of the people who do even fewer will graduate or play professional sports. So it is better to focus more on academics. Even if that does not happen there needs to be a stronger foundation at home to provide guidance to youth as well as discipline. Organizations such as the Boy's & Girl's club probably do this as well. Hopefully, that will help our youth become more responsible-productive citizens and reduce violence too.
