Civil War reenactors to occupy Stonewall Manor

Stonewall Manor is preparing for battle as it awaits the arrival of the 13th N.C., Latham’s Battery, Company F. on its grounds for a Living History/Reenactment Weekend.

Beginning at 9 a.m. May 9, Stonewall Manor will come alive with a schedule of events ranging from infantry drills and skirmishes, to artillery demonstrations and fast firing contests. Saturday’s events will conclude at 5:00 p.m., with camp reopening Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

After several years passing without having a Living History/Reenactment Weekend, Stonewall Manor and Latham’s Battery are very excited about this event. Having assembled almost 16 years ago with the late Sam Lynn at the helm, without whose help the group would not exist, the Battery takes great pride in their portrayal of Civil War History and in keeping the spirit alive.

When asked about their participation within the group, Jeff Jackson and Toni King said that almost every member of their company is a descendant of a Civil War veteran. Aside from this, each member of the group has a passion for history that drives their devotion to reenacting.

Each year Latham’s Battery participates in approximately six to eight reenactments, crossing over into West Virginia, South Carolina, and even a visit to Gettysburg. Of all the locations they have traveled to, Stonewall holds a place closer to their hearts than most. The majority of Latham’s Battery is local to this area, and they see Stonewall as their “reenactment home.” For Jeff Jackson, this was where he became interested in and eventually joined the 13th N.C. Latham’s Battery, Company F.

When asked what his favorite part of the reenactment was, Tony King (a veteran of the 13th), said “burning powder,” meaning gun and cannon fire. No doubt this year will not disappoint. With the assistance of other Company’s and Battery’s from across the State, Stonewall will have a monumental display of artillery on its grounds including 12-pound Napoleon cannons, 6-pound Parrot rifles, mountain howitzers, light mortars, muskets and more.

The two-day event will also feature a Brunswick Stew sale, fashion shows, a raffle and a variety of other live demonstrations. The Manor itself will be open for tours throughout the weekend with docents available to answer questions from the public.
