A Rocky Mount man and his grandson were found dead in their home Monday night after their house, located in 1700 Block of Springfield Road, caught fire.

Frederick Saseqha, 63, and his 5-year-old grandson, Iziaha Crews, were alone at home when the fire began, said Mike Varnell, assistant fire chief with the Rocky Mount Fire Department.

The department received the call at 9:49 p.m. and arrived on the scene minutes later, finding a heavy amount of flames on the back side of the house, Varnell said.

“They had a screened-in porch on the back and that is where the fire was,” Varnell said.

The fire expanded from the house to a Dodge Caravan, which was near the house when the fire started, Varnell said.

Upon entering the home, firefighters found Saseqha and his grandson dead inside.

The cause of the fire is unknown, and an investigation is continuing, Varnell said.
