Rocky Mount police charged a man with hit and run after he allegedly struck a child with his vehicle Wednesday evening.

Police said Emmanuel Coley, 19, was charged with felony hit and run and driving without a license after he struck a 3-year-old girl with his vehicle just after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Barnes and Cherry streets.

An anonymous caller phoned authorities of the incident, and Coley returned to the accident scene about two hours later, police said.

The girl, who was not identified by authorities, was taken to Nash General Hospital and then airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

She is believed to be in critical condition, police said.

Coley is being held in the Edgecombe County jail on a $10,000 bond. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the Twin County Crime Stoppers at 977-1111.

Why does everybody assume the child was with her parents?Just maybe.....she was with babysitter. The driver was not licensed, not payin attention, and could have been speeding.Evidently the driver can't drive and that's why he didn't have license to begin with.Yes this child shouldn't have been in the street, but lets not pretend we for a fact know if this child's parents are irresponsible or not.

Everyone wants to bash Edgecombe county! 1st of all I live in Nash County, but have worked on both sides of the tracks in Rocky Mount.. Edge & Nash sides! Both are about equal! There are people walking the streets at 3am on both sides! Why was this even an issue? The accident happened at 7pm, and who knows if the parents were with the little girl or not? Remember folks, the paper doesn't tell you everything! Don't assume!

Questions

First my prayers go out to the family. Second by so many of the other comments I would like to know where in the article does it say that the mother was not there and that the little girl was playing in the street? Third, before you keep pointing fingers at Edgecombe County, look at all the crime and murders that have happened in Nash the last year.
