Hey, where is all that global warming many people were gabbing about last year? We’ve been freezing lately, wearing so many clothes that we can hardly lift our arms to wave at anybody. Makes us think that warming is a good idea, after all.
It is so cold that, at 15 days into January, I still have part of a snowman in my backyard. He does not want to go away and we are referring to him as the abominable snowman because he may be waiting for another snow — at least that’s what the old folks used to say when I was a kid and snow hung around for more than a few days. Most of this one is gone, but his bottom half was still visible this morning.
The snowman was made, along with two others, on Dec. 31 when family members from Florida, including two small children, were here to spend a few days after Christmas and to enjoy the snow. They took advantage of an opportunity to frolic in the snow, throwing snowballs, making snow angels and building snowmen. I don’t know what kind of magic they put into Frosty to make a good chunk of him hang around so long, except that it has been too cold for him to melt. And he spends most of the day in the sunny part of the area.
When we were scorching in the heat of last summer I was at the forefront of the numbers of people who wished for colder weather. Well, we got our wish, and how! Now some people are in a hurry for the return of spring and summer. And although I like fall and winter better, I am pretty close to the forefront with those who would like to see the temperature climb just a bit.
We would like just a taste of spring, and we would accept that as a promise of more comfortable days to come.
Meanwhile, I’m guessing that the weather report may have captured the highest Neilsen ratings for television viewing the past two months, as we have watched cold fronts laden with snow, sleet and freezing rain sweep across the U.S., from north to south and east to west and vice versa. If it stays this cold for the rest of the winter, it could change our viewing habits.
They could decide to make a movie of it to show during those torrid summer months, when we, again, will be longing for cooler weather. They could call it something appropriate like “Desperate Snowbound Housewives.”
School children love snow days when they don’t have to go to school and can get outside and play in it and build snowmen. Some things have not changed since you and I were in school, particularly if you remember the big snow of 1948 — deep snowdrifts, long icicles, and no school to worry about, we thought.
We were out of school for a long time — it could have been only a few days, but when there is snow and you get to stay home and play in it, memory makes it a long time. We were happy with it. Then, suddenly, it became a monster. It turned on us.
We were shocked to hear that we would have to go to school for a half-day on Saturdays to make up the days we missed because it snowed. Oh, the inhumanity of it! Were the parents behind this sneaky move?
They weren’t, and we went. Soon, all the snow was gone and spring was on its way.
Now I have a snowman that is refusing to leave the premises, and may be waiting for another snow. Oh the inhumanity of it! Frosty may be telling us not to reach for the sunscreen just yet.
