The smell of smoky barbecue and sound of live music will fill downtown Rocky Mount this weekend as the sixth annual Eastern Carolina BBQ Throw Down kicks off today.
The event runs from noon to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in front of the Rocky Mount Traun Station. A barbecue competition sanctioned by the Kansas City BBQ Society will feature 56 teams competing in four categories of chicken, ribs, pork and beef brisket for a $5,000 Grand Champion award and other prizes.
“By the end of the BBQ Throw Down, over $20,000 will be awarded to participants, because there are 53 opportunities to win,” said Debbie Julio, the city’s special events coordinator. “You have to come out and taste some of the best barbecue you’ll ever have – there is just so much to do for the whole family.”
The event also will feature food vendors, children’s activities such as pony rides, table games and inflatables, live music by The Embers on Friday and the Main Event band and Holiday Band on Saturday, a BMX Stunt Show in the Station Square parking lot and a fundraising Corn Hole Tournament sponsored by the Rocky Mount Public Utilities Department.
