Authorities release identity of woman killed by train

A Rocky Mount woman who was hit by a train died before authorities arrived Saturday night, police said.

The incident happened around 8:20 p.m. when Mary Elizabeth Lawton was crossing the tracks and was hit by a southbound CSX freight train. Police said the 50-year-old woman had already died by the time authorities got to the scene on Grand Avenue.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. An autopsy will be performed and authorities would not comment on whether alcohol was a factor in the wreck as the toxicology tests are pending.
