Rocky Mount police are offering $5,000 rewards in two recent cases of violence against area youth – the Jan. 18 slaying of a teen and the Jan. 27 shooting of four youth on a basketball court.
Brian Freeman, 15, was shot and killed on the 700 block of East Highland Ave. while walking home from a friend’s house. Police said detectives have investigated some credible leads, but no arrests have been made.
A group of youth were playing basketball around 6 p.m. Monday when gunshots were fired and four were hit on the court near Word Tabernacle Church. Three teens – Michael Lyons, 17, Jakavis Whaley, 19, and Antwon Jefferson, 13 – were treated and released for gunshot wounds at Nash General Hospital. A fourth victim, 12-year-old Nyreek Horne, was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he is listed in critical condition in Greenville.
The rewards are available for information leading to the arrest of the gunman responsible for the shootings as well as the death, which is Rocky Mount’s second homicide of 2014.
