Rocky Mount police are offering $5,000 rewards in two recent cases of violence against area youth – the Jan. 18 slaying of a teen and the Jan. 27 shooting of four youth on a basketball court.

Brian Freeman, 15, was shot and killed on the 700 block of East Highland Ave. while walking home from a friend’s house. Police said detectives have investigated some credible leads, but no arrests have been made.

A group of youth were playing basketball around 6 p.m. Monday when gunshots were fired and four were hit on the court near Word Tabernacle Church. Three teens – Michael Lyons, 17, Jakavis Whaley, 19, and Antwon Jefferson, 13 – were treated and released for gunshot wounds at Nash General Hospital. A fourth victim, 12-year-old Nyreek Horne, was flown to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he is listed in critical condition in Greenville.

The rewards are available for information leading to the arrest of the gunman responsible for the shootings as well as the death, which is Rocky Mount’s second homicide of 2014.

perplexed also

Unfortunately this is not a perfect world we live in where people "do the right thing". Money makes people do things that they never done before. Like "the right thing". The people that know what happened are afraid to come forward or just don't give a care until it happens to someone they love. Sometimes they still won't tell even if there own family member is killed.

Attitude

The only people that think that way are the ones that make comments like this... It is the issue with this area, "I do nothing unless something is in it for me." It is NOT like that everywhere. How about setting an example, instead?

Dexter Johnson

The reward money is nothing. $5000 is not enough for someone to come forward. Why don't rmpd up the reward for dexter Johnson and these recent murders and people will come forward. Also have the gun buy back program to get some guns off the street. Most so called thugs with guns don't have $100.00 in there pocket. Look how successful the last buyback program was. These churches should sponsor the buy back program. Instead of screaming, fainting and crying they should do something. Faith without works is useless.

Why do we have to pay people to do the right thing

The comments totally perplex me. Fir the life of me if someone has information in these cases they need to step up becise it is the right thisng to do NOT to get paid. This attitude is why we are in the shape we are in Rocky Mount!
