A good truck is like a good tool – it can handle a wide variety of jobs and everyone wants to borrow it.
The 2009 Ford F-150 fits that description well.
The changes in the 2009 model focus more on adding features and making tweaks instead of any major shifts.
The steering and handling remain much the same, but engineers worked hard to reduce noise and vibration inside the cab.
The difference is welcome.
The F-150 also offers 13 different options when it comes to the wheels, from the basic “workhorse” XL model that starts at 17 inches up to the 20-inch wheels on the Platinum model.
The Platinum is the new high-end luxury trim level for the F-150, above even the Lariat and King Ranch models.
It features chrome everywhere, powered running boards, 10-way power captain leather chairs, and Satin Gloss Rippled Lacrosse Ash wood grain accents the center of the dash, center console and doors.
But don’t think a luxury option means Ford is going soft under the hood.
The F-150 comes with one of three V-8 engines that offer drivers the change to take advantage of ethanol fuels and increased horsepower while towing or offer better fuel economy.
Ford also includes many “smart” features to make the F-150 a better tool for the job at hand.
The pickup box itself boasts a cargo capacity of 65.5 cubic feet when properly equipped.
In earlier models, offering that much space can make it difficult to get into the back of the truck. No more.
Depending on the model, box side steps and a tailgate step make it easier to get in and out of the back of the truck.
The stowable bed extender lets drivers back in cargo to the end of the open tailgate. The enclosed midbox storage system is lockable and can even keep drinks cold.
Of course, many drivers use a Ford pickup to tow items around. All models include the Advance Trac with RSC to help with braking and minimize trailer sway while carrying a heavy load.
Tow Haul Mode changes when the vehicle shifts gears to keep up RPMs while hauling items.
Throw in all the extras that come standard on cars, and the F-150 still delivers.
