Police are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old Tarboro woman who was found dead Thursday evening in Rocky Mount.

Benita R. Knight was killed after being stabbed in the neck and side, police reports said, but an official cause of death has not been determined.

Knight was found dead in an alley behind Guiding Light Church on the 200 block of Ivy Street, according to police reports. The incident was reported around 6:30 p.m. by an area resident.

Knight's body was transported to Chapel Hill for an autopsy. The case remains under investigation, officials said. No further information was made available Friday.

Knight's murder represents the sixth homicide in Rocky Mount this year.
