A Hollister man was shot in the shoulder during an attempted robbery, deputies said Wednesday.
Waverly Burgess, 25, was leaving Griffins store in Red Oak around 4:35 p.m. Tuesday when a car with three men in it approached him to ask for directions, said Nash County Sheriff's Office Lt. Pat Joyner.
One of the men asked Burgess to give him his wallet and when Burgess refused, one of the suspects shot him in the upper shoulder, Joyner said.
Burgess was taken to Nash General Hospital and later transferred to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was in fair condition at presstime.
The Nash County Sheriff's Office is looking for the three men who reportedly left the scene in a green Ford Expedition.
Numerous people were in Griffins at the time, but no one was injured, Joyner said.
