The outcome of Tuesday's election pits Randy Stewart against W.B. Bullock for the N.C. House District 25 seat.
Stewart, a former three-term Nash County commissioner, defeated Carnell Taylor in the primary election to garner the Democratic bid for November's general election.
According to unofficial election results, Stewart took 8,226 votes and Taylor took 5,229. The seat is being vacated by N.C. Rep. Bill Daughtridge, R-Nash, who is the lone Republican vying for state treasurer.
"I just think that we had a lot of strong support from one end of the county to the other," Stewart said about what contributed to his win.
Taylor, a business owner who ran against Daughtridge in the last election for the District 25 seat, said he will support Stewart in the general election.
"I congratulate Randy on his victory, and I do stand ready to support him in November," Taylor said.
Stewart said his campaign against Bullock, the Ward 6 Rocky Mount councilman, begins today, as Stewart and his campaign team look at what strategies were effective to win the primary race. One on one contact with voters and a large mailing campaign helped, he said
"I think we had a good message, and we had a good strategy for delivering that message," Stewart said.
His platform revolves around issues he addressed as a commissioner – education, jobs, law enforcement and health care.
Bullock appeared on the Republican ticket against Robert Coats, who dropped his bid for the seat on the last day of filing.
Prior to the election, Bullock said both Stewart and Taylor ran good races, and he was looking forward to challenging either one for the District 25 seat. In the coming weeks, the Republican candidate will better define his campaign strategy and platforms on health care, education, economy, immigration and veterans affairs, he said.
"It will start changing because we will have a little bit clearer direction as to what we want to do, how we'll be doing it and who we'll be doing it against," he said.
