A political newcomer defeated a third-term Edgecombe County commissioner in Tuesday's primary.
Evelyn Powell received 792 votes (72 percent), compared to the 274 (26 percent) votes received by Calvin Anderson.
Delia Sherrod received 25 votes (2 percent) for the District 1 Edgecombe County Commissioner seat.
"I am very pleased that the people of Edgecombe County District 1 felt I was qualified and would be an asset to them," Powell said following the election. "I want to thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to help them."
