A man is in critical condition following a shooting in the parking lot of a club early New Year's morning.
William Corbett, 25, was called to tow a car for a parking violation from a lot outside the Powder Keg at 2725 N. Church St. when he was confronted by "several subjects," according to a police report.
An unidentified person from the group emerged with a gun and shot Corbett once in the chest. The victim was taken to Nash General Hospital and then flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening.
No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, said Capt. R.E. Baggett of the Rocky Mount Police Department, and no suspects have been identified. Baggett said the incident is still under investigation.
"We have some leads that we're following up on," Baggett said, but could not offer any more information.
Though the reason for the shooting is still unknown, Baggett said what little information is available may suggest that the shooting is related to the victim's role in removing the vehicle in violation.
"It seems to be over the towing of a car," Baggett said. "That's what we're working on."
