Santa Claus brought lots of rain to the Twin Counties on Christmas, causing dozens of traffic accidents throughout the area.

Four people were charged with impaired driving Monday, including a teenage girl and a truck driver who slammed his big rig into a car.

"It's frustrating – it started at 8 o'clock (Monday) when we had a wreck with a 17-year-old girl who was drunk," N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Eddie Thomas said. "Then by 11:30 or 12, it hit the fan with all the rain."

More than 2 inches of rain fell Monday on the Twin Counties, and most of the wrecks were caused by the rain, Thomas said. Several accidents occurred on U.S. 64, backing up holiday traffic on Monday afternoon.

"People need to slow down – and stop drinking," Thomas said.

Marcia Victoria Ginn, 17, of Greenville was charged with driving while impaired after she crashed a car she was driving at 8 a.m. Christmas Day on U.S. 258, north of Princeville, Thomas said.

Ginn's blood alcohol content was 0.14, Thomas said. The legal limit for driving in North Carolina is less than 0.08.

Marrion Blount, 20, of Wilson was in the car with Ginn during the wreck. Neither was seriously hurt, and Blount was charged with aiding and abetting impaired driving because Ginn was driving Blount's car.

Rocky Mount police also investigated a suspected drunken driving accident on Christmas Day when big rig without a trailer slammed into a car, trapping two girls inside for a short period of time, Rocky Mount police Sgt. C.D. Williams said.

Whitaker Winfourd, 57, of Robersonville was charged with commercial driving while impaired after police measured his blood alcohol content at 0.16, Williams said. Commercial truck drivers are considered impaired under the law in North Carolina at 0.04.

Sonya Lentria Smith, 27, and Shantae Smith, 16, both of Hobgood were injured in the wreck, which occurred about 11 a.m. Monday on North Church Street. Police didn't know how the two were related.

Police charge that Winfourd ran a stop light and slammed his rig into the passenger side of the car, pushing the passenger – Shantae Smith – to the driver's side of the car.

"That girl is lucky," Williams said. "It made the car about half the normal size."

Both Sonya and Shantae Smith were taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Neither have life-threatening injuries, Williams said.

Winfourd, who was on his way to see his daughter for Christmas, wasn't hurt in the wreck, police said. His bond was set at $20,000.

The patrol also investigated a drunken driving wreck on U.S. 64 Monday afternoon, and police arrested a suspected impaired driver outside Walgreens on Sunset Avenue. No one was seriously hurt in either incident.
