Rocky Mount police are investigating a homicide that occurred Saturday morning.
Police officers responded to a shooting at 5:50 a.m., said Rocky Mount Sgt. T.A. Bashore. The victim, Detron Williams, 20, was found in the parking lot of his apartment complex on 214 Adams St.
Bashore said Williams was shot in the upper torso with a 9mm handgun, but he did not know how many shots were fired as of presstime.
Williams was not dead when the Stony Creek Rescue Squad arrived on the scene, but efforts to help him failed, Bashore said.
"I know when rescue got there, they did all they could for him," he said.
One witness told the police that they saw a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene, Bashore said. Police do not have a suspect or a possible motive.
"That's what we're working on now, trying to piece together what happened," Bashore said.
It also is unknown why Williams was in the parking lot that early in the morning, Bashore said.
None of the witnesses said they heard any sounds of an argument or a fight, only the gunshots, Bashore said.
As far as police know, nothing was stolen from Williams, Bashore said. Police are still looking through items found at the scene, such as bullets and shell casings.
"We're still looking through the evidence that we found over there," he said.
