St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church has called a Virginia native to serve as its new pastor.

The Rev. Terence L. Thomas comes to the congregation after previously having served as pastor of two other AME churches, a release says. His earlier service saw the congregations spiritually renewed and significantly grown.

Born and reared in Hampton, Va., he earned a bachelor’s in political science and history from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va. After accepting the call into the ministry, he earned a master’s of divinity from the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union.

Thomas preached his initial sermon at St. Paul AME Church in Newport News, Va., where he has been mentored by the Rev. Sidney W. Williams.

Thomas is married to the former Tara Leach. They have two children, Brianna Nicole Thomas and Caleb Josiah Thomas.

St. Thomas AME is at 1150 Tarboro St.
