Lakeside Baptist Church will mark Ash Wednesday with a special performance of the “Son of God Mass,” a modern work by English composer James Whitbourn.

The nine-movement work will be performed by the Lakeside Chancel Choir, organist Mark Gansor and soprano saxophonist Michael Stephenson. Amy Shortt, Lakeside’s minister of music, will conduct.

“The movements of the mass express a wide range of emotions from joy and sorrow to hope and peace which can be reflective of the wide range of life experiences,” a release about the performance says.

The work’s opening movement, Kyrie, is a plea for mercy. Following movements include Gloria, which celebrates the granting of mercy; Lava Me, a prayer for spiritual cleansing; Sanctus and Benedictus, a prayer for peace; and Amen, which affirms hope in God’s grace and the triumph of the human spirit.

Lakeside Baptist Church is at 1501 Sunset Ave. Its pastor is Dr. Jody C. Wright.
